The Auto Strada has consumed the traditional road through the Tiber Valley between Pieve Santo Stefano and Sansepolcro, so the official Via di Francesco track goes east of the highway over the mountains to connect the two in a grueling and steep 36km day. Instead, the recommended track leads west of Lago Montedoglio and reaches the goal in 11 fewer kilometers on gravel roads up into the hills above the lake, enjoying wide views of the surrounding region before joining the Cammino di Assisi and descending onto quiet and flat country roads to enter Sansepolcro from the south.
