Pilgrim credentials
Understand what a credential records, what must be verified before travel, and how to keep a reliable paper trail.
A pilgrim credential is a paper record of the journey. Issuers, offices, costs, opening times, stamp practices, and certificate requirements can change, so confirm the exact document and destination office before relying on any rule.
Confirm the issuer, document, and current process.
Collect a clear record without treating stamps as live proof.
Verify current eligibility before the final day.
Protect the original and retain useful context.
Before you request one
Ask the current issuing organization:
- which credential applies to the route you intend to walk;
- how and where it is issued;
- whether advance ordering or an in-person visit is required;
- the current cost or donation, payment method, and collection hours;
- whether the document is available in the locale you need.
This site does not issue credentials or verify office availability. A page, email, or prior pilgrim report can become stale. Confirm with the organization responsible for the exact document.
While you walk
Keep the credential dry and ask for a dated stamp where one is offered. Write the place name yourself when the stamp is difficult to read. A stamp documents a stop; it does not prove current route conditions, accommodation quality, or eligibility for a later certificate.
If a stamp is unavailable, continue the journey rather than inventing one. Keep a short note or receipt only when it is appropriate and safe to do so, and let the destination office decide what evidence it accepts.
If you want a certificate
Certificate names, qualifying distances, route rules, required evidence, office locations, and opening times belong to the issuing office. Check them for the date and direction of your walk before the final stage. The dedicated Testimonium page provides orientation, but it is not an approval or eligibility decision.
Do not build the trip around an assumed office opening. Keep a fallback for collecting or requesting the document later when the issuer supports that process.
Keep a backup
Photograph completed pages periodically and store the images somewhere you can reach if the original is lost. Keep private details out of public posts. My Plan and its print packet can hold route, stay, and personal notes, but neither replaces the original credential or the issuer's current rules.
