A man who changed everything

Born the son of a wealthy silk merchant in 1181, Francis abandoned comfort for radical poverty, joy, and nature. He rebuilt churches with his hands, preached to birds, brokered peace with wolves, and traveled to Egypt to meet the Sultan.

His spirit of simplicity and reverence defines the path you are walking. Understanding him helps you understand the places you see.

Eremo delle Carceri

Where silence became prayer

Hidden in a ravine above Assisi, these caves are where Francis and his first companions retreated to pray. Pilgrims usually visit it as an Assisi side trip rather than a required walking stage.

San Damiano

Where a crucifix changed everything

In this roadside church, a painted crucifix spoke to the young Francis: "Go and repair my house." The same place later became Clare's home and one of the most important Assisi visits for pilgrims.

Porziuncola

Where it all began and ended

This tiny chapel, now inside Santa Maria degli Angeli, is where the Franciscan movement was born and where Francis died on October 3, 1226. It is a natural Assisi-area visit before or after the walk.

Basilica di San Francesco

Where the journey converges

Built after Francis's canonization, the basilica is where he is buried. For many pilgrims this is the emotional destination where route, story, and gratitude meet.

The Tau — your trail companion

Shaped like the letter T, the Tau is the symbol of the Via di Francesco, just as the scallop shell marks the Camino de Santiago. Francis adopted it as his personal sign.

Today, pilgrims wear a small wooden Tau pendant as a reminder of their journey. You will see it on trail markers, church doorways, and around the necks of fellow walkers.

Trail tip

Look for the Tau symbol on trail markers and church doorways along the Via di Francesco. Many pilgrims pick up a wooden Tau pendant in Assisi before or after their walk.
