This most challenging day follows the CAI trails 073, 070 and 053, as well as the Senteiro delle Foreste Sacre, through lush forests with sweeping vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is possible to shorten the day with a stay at Retreat House Santicchio, just south of Poggio della Forca. There are some serious climbs both up and down as you make your way to the villages of Frassineta and Rimbocchi in advance of your final, steep climb to St Francis' beloved and beautiful La Verna. The end result is well worth the effort, as the essence of St Francis still permeates this holy mountain retreat.
