Best Time to Go
Seasonal advice for walking the Via di Francesco.
Seasons Overview
The Via di Francesco crosses the Apennine mountains, meaning weather plays a significant role in difficulty and safety.
Spring (May - June)
The most popular time.
- Pros: Everything is green, wildflowers are blooming, temperatures are mild.
- Cons: Can still be rainy/muddy in May. Accommodation bookings fill up fast.
Autumn (September - October)
The pilgrim's favorite.
- Pros: Stable weather, harvest season (grapes and olives), beautiful foliage.
- Cons: Days get shorter in late October.
Summer (July - August)
Challenging heat.
- Pros: Long daylight hours.
- Cons: Very hot (can exceed 35°C/95°F). Some sections lack shade. Many Italians vacation in August (Ferragosto), so accommodation availability varies.
Winter (November - April)
Expert only.
- Pros: Solitude.
- Cons: Snow is likely on the passes (Passo della Calla, Citerna). Many pilgrim hostels close for the season. Mud can be severe.
warning
Mud Warning: The clay soil in Umbria becomes incredibly sticky mud in wet weather, sometimes making trails impassable.
